Metatarsal Problems (callus)
| |
| When a metatarsal bone (the
long bones of the foot) is longer or lower than the others, it hits the
ground first. As a result, the skin under the bone thickens and forms a
callus. This can be quite painful and may feel like a rock in your
shoe.
Surgical treatment involves cutting the bone in a "V" shape. The end of the bone is then "lifted" and aligned with the other bones. A wire may be needed to fixate the bone. Follow up care includes wearing a surgical shoe and keeping the dressing dry until the stitches are removed in one to two weeks. Your doctor will discuss your individual procedure, post operative care and possible complications with you prior to your surgery. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask your doctor. The more you know about what to expect, the more smoothly your foot surgery and recovery are likely to go.
