Hammertoes/Bone Spurs

HAMMERTOES

A muscle imbalance or abnormal bone length can make one or more of the small bones buckle under, causing the joints to contract. This can be due to biomechanical imbalance, hereditary or wearing ill fitted footwear. The result is a contracted toe or "hammertoe." When the toe is not on correct alignment, the skin becomes irritated resulting in a corn (build up of dead skin cells where shoes press and rub). These may become painful and infected.

Surgical correction depends on the type of deformity. A Tenotomy/capsulotomy may be performed to release the buckling. An arthroplasty may be necessary to remove a portion of bone at the joint to allow straightening of the toe. Occasionally, a wire will be necessary. Your doctor will discuss your individual procedure with you.

Following surgery you will be able to walk in a surgical shoe. Stitches will remain in place for 1-2 weeks and the foot must be kept dry.

BONE SPURS

A bone spur or overgrowth of bone may occur alone or with a hammertoe, Bone spurs have a variety of causes.

Surgical correction involves a small incision followed by raping of the bone to smooth the spur. Following surgery you will be able to walk in a surgical shoe. Stitches will remain in place for 1-2 weeks and the foot must be kept dry.

Your doctor will discuss your individual procedure, post operative care and possible complications with you prior to your surgery. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask you doctor. The more you know about what to expect, the more smoothly your foot surgery and recovery are likely to go.
